VW ID.4 vs. Tiguan: is Electric or Gas Right for You
VW ID.4 vs. VW Tiguan - Which Volkswagen Crossover is Right for You?
A small crossover is a great way to get more versatility from your daily driver without imposing space requirements. Volkswagen models like the Tiguan and ID.4 are excellent examples, offering comfortable accommodations, flexible cargo space, and appealing features while retaining city-friendly maneuverability. These vehicles are close in size and share the same "compact" segment. However, they offer unique attributes that make them suitable for different needs and preferences-the most apparent of which is their powertrain. The ID.4 is ideal for EV enthusiasts, while the Tiguan is better for drivers who need the most range. But what if you fall somewhere in between? To help you determine which is a better fit for your Hillsborough drives, here's a look at some of their distinguishing characteristics.
Performance
What are you looking for in your next vehicle? Do you want something quick to accelerate? Is eco-friendliness a priority? Or maybe you want something for long-distance road trips. Here's a look at some of the powertrain pros and cons of the VW ID.4 and VW Tiguan.
ID.4
The VW ID.4 offers multiple powertrain options, allowing you to select your preferred blend of performance, range, and value. RWD models (201 hp, 229 lb-ft) provide up to 275 miles of EPA-rated range and reach 60 mph from a standstill in ~7.5 seconds. AWD models (295 hp, 339 lb-ft) deliver more zip off the line (0-60: ~5.4s) but have less range (~255 miles).
Because electric motors are far more effective in converting their energy source into horsepower, their EPA efficiency ratings are considerably higher. The ID.4 achieves an estimated 99 MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent) in AWD and 107 MPGe in RWD.
The ID.4 is easy to charge and makes an excellent daily commuter. However, owners will likely need to install home charging equipment, and longer journeys will require more careful planning. That said, new ID.4 customers will receive complimentary unlimited half-hour charging sessions on Electrify America's fast-charging network for three years.
Tiguan
The VW Tiguan is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (184 horsepower, 221 pound-feet of torque) that carries it from zero to 60 mph in 8.1-9.1 seconds, depending on the configuration. While it won't set any tracks on fire, the Tiguan's nimble handling and responsive steering make it satisfying to drive.
The Tiguan also offers strong fuel economy for its size. In FWD, the Tiguan achieves an EPA-estimated 27 mpg combined and a total range of ~413 miles per tank. These numbers drop slightly with AWD to 25 mpg combined and ~398 miles of range. The Tiguan's longer range and comparatively quick refueling may make it more convenient for longer family road trips.
Size, Accommodations, and Utility
Both models have near equal wheelbase measurements, but the Tiguan is nearly six inches longer. While the Tiguan has a roomier second row, the ID.4 electric powertrain layout makes it roomier up front. The ID.4 has plenty of cargo space for most needs. However, the AWD Tiguan is the "winner" if you need maximum storage.
Another important consideration is the Tiguan's available third row. FWD models offer seven-passenger accommodations, making it a great choice for families who need the additional seatbelts while retaining minimal space requirements.
